Inspection
For a chimney sweep in Chili, NY, Rochester Premier Chimney Sweep cleans fireplaces and wood stoves, relines old flues and repairs the caps, crowns and mortar on homes spread across one of the roomiest towns in Monroe County. We are about 25 minutes away.
Chili has bigger lots, more woodpiles and more wood stoves than the first-ring suburbs. We sweep them, reline them and repair the chimneys that go with them. A lot of Chili runs on firewood, and it shows.
Contact UsChili covers almost 40 square miles, so tell us if you are in Chili Center, North Chili, South Chili or out toward Clifton. We group calls by area, and that keeps your wait short.
Tell us how much wood you burn and what kind. A stove that runs all winter gets a different schedule than a fireplace used at holidays.
Contact UsChili was formed in 1822 from the town of Riga and covers almost 40 square miles, with about 737 people per square mile, a lot roomier than the towns closer to the city. Interstate 490 and the Thruway cross it. Bigger lots mean more woodpiles, more stoves and chimneys that actually get used.
Many Chili homeowners heat part of the house with wood. A stove pushed hard and turned down at night makes more creosote than a fast hot fire. Honestly, the pipe is the part people forget. Look at it every couple of months in a heavy season and clean it at least once a year.
Around Chili Center and North Chili you find mid-century ranches next to newer colonials. Their brick chimneys nearly always have clay flue tile and a concrete crown, and the usual trouble is a cracked crown or a cap that rusted away.
Out toward South Chili and Clifton the lots are bigger and the trees come right up to the house. Leaves, nests and branches clog any flue without a cap, and open ground catches more wind. A mesh cap solves most of it.
Where trees crowd the roof, leaves and twigs fill the cap and the flue. A stainless cap with mesh keeps most of that out, and a clear flue drafts better. We trim nothing but the problem.
Expect a chimney sweep in Chili to cost $200 to $330 per flue in 2026, with wood stoves near the top because the pipe has to come apart. A Level 2 inspection runs $175 to $400, and a stainless stove liner $1,800 to $4,800. Every price is written down after we see your setup.
| Job | Typical Chili home | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Stove and flue sweep | Home heated partly with wood | $250 to $330 |
| Insulated stainless liner | Ranch adding a wood stove | $1,800 to $3,500 |
| Single-flue stainless cap | Home with leaves in the flue | $200 to $450 |
| Crown repair | Concrete crown, cracked | $350 to $1,500 |
Those are western New York ranges, nothing more. After the roof walk we put the real price in writing.
We take the stovepipe apart, clean it outside, brush the flue, vacuum the stove and check clearances and gaskets. Stoves are about a third of our Chili calls, and we think a yearly stove sweep is the best money a wood burner spends. See chimney inspection.
A stove needs a flue sized to its outlet, and an old fireplace flue is usually too big. An insulated stainless liner fixes both problems and carries a lifetime warranty. We fit about 85 a year. See chimney liner installation.
A Hy-C stainless cap keeps out squirrels, starlings and leaves, and its spark screen holds back embers. It carries a lifetime guarantee. See chimney cap installation.
The crown is the concrete lid that sheds water off the brick. We seal hairline cracks and replace broken crowns. See chimney crown repair.
If the glaze is thick, brushing alone will not lift it. We use Anti-Creo-Soot, a powder that softens third-degree creosote over a few fires so a second sweep can clear it. We've used it on about a dozen Chili stoves this year.
Chimney Saver, a breathable repellent, slows water in sound brick and carries a 10-year guarantee. It will not fix a cracked crown. See chimney waterproofing.
Every Chili visit starts with how you heat, since a stove and a fireplace need different work.
A stove visit runs about two hours, and a fireplace under an hour and a half.
More woodpiles means more wet wood. Seasoned hardwood that dried for 6 to 12 months burns hotter and cleaner. For a masonry fireplace, keep to about two face cords between cleanings. Say it with me: dry wood.
Rochester gets just over 100 inches of snow in an average year, and every freeze-thaw cycle opens the cracks in a crown a bit more. A fall visit is the cheapest way to find them.
Smell smoke in the room while the stove is burning? Stop, let the fire die and call us. A leaking joint or a blocked flue is the likely cause, and no fire is worth that risk.
Back north near the lake, Greece is where our crews are based, and they know that side of Monroe County well.
At least once a year, and look at the stovepipe every couple of months in a heavy burning season. If you see buildup of an eighth of an inch or more, clean it. A stove turned down overnight makes creosote faster than a hot, fast fire.
Take the pipe off the stove and look in with a flashlight. Black soot a sixteenth of an inch thick, or any shiny glaze, means call us. Shiny glaze is third-degree creosote, the kind that burns hot and is hard to brush off.
Almost always. A stove needs a flue sized to its outlet, and an old fireplace flue is usually far too big. An oversized flue cools the smoke so it leaves more creosote. A stainless liner fixes that and meets code.
Hold off on lighting anything. A nest on the smoke shelf can block the flue and start a fire. Call us and we will check the flue, clear what we can reach and fit a stainless cap with mesh. Trapping or removing wildlife is not something we do.
Yes, all of it. Chili spreads over almost 40 square miles, so we book by area. Give us your street when you call and we will tell you the next open day for your neighborhood, usually inside the week outside the fall rush.
We had a brown stain by the chimney every spring and two roofers blamed the shingles. Ron went up, took pictures of the crown and showed me the crack. New crown, dry ceiling, and he mentioned two cracked bricks before I asked.
Bought a 1940s house in Brighton and the inspector said the chimney needed a closer look. They sent a camera down the flue the next week and gave us a report the bank wanted. We closed on schedule.
Our wood stove would not draw. They fitted a stainless liner and a new cap in one day, showed me how to burn it and haven't left a speck of soot on the carpet. First winter with no smoky smell.
