Chimney Inspection
Level 1 and camera inspections with a written 21 point report, for yearly checks, home sales and after a fire.
Inspection
For a chimney sweep in Fairport, NY, Rochester Premier Chimney Sweep cleans fireplaces and wood stoves, inspects every flue and repairs the brick chimneys on older canal-village homes and across the town of Perinton. We drive out from Greece, about 35 minutes, and we do not rush the old ones.
Fairport grew up as an Erie Canal port, and a lot of its older houses carry chimneys to match. Perinton around it adds newer homes. We sweep, inspect and repair both kinds, and the old ones are our favorites.
Contact UsFairport is the farthest east we regularly work, so we group visits with other Perinton calls. Book a week or two ahead outside the fall rush and we will tell you which day we are in your neighborhood.
Tell us if you are in the village or out in Perinton, and roughly how old the house is. Old village houses take longer, and we would rather plan the time than rush it.
Contact UsFairport became a village in 1867 after the Erie Canal turned a swamp into a busy port. People still call it the crown jewel of the canal. Perinton, the town around it, has about 47,500 residents on almost 35 square miles. We work on old village chimneys and newer Perinton ones on the same day, sometimes on the same street.
Houses near Main Street (that is Route 250) and along the canal go back a century or more. Their chimneys often have soft old mortar, clay flue tile and no liner. A Level 2 camera inspection is how you find out what is inside before you light a fire.
Outside the village, toward Egypt and Bushnell's Basin, the houses are newer and so are the chimneys. Crowns still crack, caps still rust and liners still deserve a camera after fifteen or twenty winters.
The canal keeps the ground damp, and damp air clings to brick. On north-facing chimneys near the water we look for white salt stains, moss and flaking faces.
Some bigger village homes have a fireplace on every floor, all feeding one chimney with several flues. Each flue gets its own brush and its own line on the report. We find the forgotten ones, too.
Repointing a chimney in Fairport runs $600 to $3,500 in 2026, depending on how tall the stack is and how much mortar has failed. A sweep costs $200 to $330, a Level 2 inspection $175 to $400. We quote repointing after a roof walk, with photos, in writing.
| Job | Typical Fairport home | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Repointing the top section | Village home with brick chimney | $600 to $1,800 |
| Full chimney repointing | Older two-story with a tall stack | $1,800 to $3,500 |
| Level 2 inspection | House under contract | $175 to $400 |
| Stainless liner for a gas insert | Older home with a clay flue | $1,800 to $3,000 |
Those figures are Rochester-area ranges. The real price gets written down once we have looked at your roof.
Repointing is swapping the crumbling mortar between bricks. We grind out about three quarters of an inch, pack in new mortar colored to match and clean the brick. Old canal-village walls reward patience. See chimney repointing.
A Level 2 inspection means a camera down the flue, a look in the attic and a written 21 point report. Lenders and buyers expect it on older homes. See chimney inspection.
Older clay flues crack, and gas inserts put out damp exhaust that wears them faster. An insulated stainless liner with a lifetime warranty is the usual cure, and we put in about 85 last year. See chimney liner installation.
A Hy-C stainless cap keeps out rain, animals and sparks, and carries a lifetime guarantee. A top-mount damper seals the flue and keeps winter air out of the house. Both are small jobs with a big payoff.
Hairline cracks get sealed and broken crowns get replaced, and every crown job is guaranteed. See chimney crown repair.
Chimney Saver, a breathable repellent, slows water getting into sound brick and carries a 10-year guarantee. It will not fix open joints or a cracked crown. See chimney waterproofing.
Older Fairport houses need more time, so we plan the visit before the truck pulls up.
Older village homes run two to three hours, and we are glad to explain what we see as we go.
Old brick drinks water like a sponge, and in Rochester that water freezes. Water expands about 9 percent when it turns to ice, enough to pop the face off a brick. Tight joints and a whole crown are the cheapest protection going.
Rochester averages just over 100 inches of snow a year, and that means a long string of freeze-thaw cycles. The cracks show up in fall if you know where to look, and we do.
A chimney that leans or drops bricks in the yard needs a look before the next thaw. Call us in the fall, not after the first leak, and bring the photos if you have them.
Over on the west side of the county, our crews also work in Chili, where lots are bigger and wood stoves are more common.
The whole town, from the village streets out to Egypt and Bushnell's Basin. Perinton is about 35 square miles, so we group visits by neighborhood. Give us your address when you book and we will name the next open day for your part of town.
Yes. The Level 2 inspection runs a camera down each flue, checks the attic and the roof line and ends with a written 21 point report with photos. Older village houses often have cracked clay tile or no liner, so the $175 to $400 pays for itself.
It can. Damp ground and air keep brick wet longer, and wet brick freezes more often. Watch for white salt stains, mossy patches and flaking faces. Tight joints and a whole crown matter most, and a breathable repellent helps on sound brick.
One day covers a small top-section job. A whole chimney takes two or three dry days. We grind out the failed joints, pack in mortar, clean the brick and tidy the roof. Cold or wet weather can slide the date by a day or two.
A Level 1 covers everything reachable without tools, for a chimney used the way it always was. A Level 2 adds a camera scan of the flue and an attic check. You need that one when you buy, sell or change fuel, and after any fire.
We had a brown stain by the chimney every spring and two roofers blamed the shingles. Ron went up, took pictures of the crown and showed me the crack. New crown, dry ceiling, and he mentioned two cracked bricks before I asked.
Bought a 1940s house in Brighton and the inspector said the chimney needed a closer look. They sent a camera down the flue the next week and gave us a report the bank wanted. We closed on schedule.
Our wood stove would not draw. They fitted a stainless liner and a new cap in one day, showed me how to burn it and haven't left a speck of soot on the carpet. First winter with no smoky smell.
