Inspection
For a chimney sweep in Penfield, NY, Rochester Premier Chimney Sweep cleans fireplaces and wood stoves, replaces caps and fireplace panels, and repairs brick chimneys on both newer subdivision homes and old farmhouses. We drive over from Greece, about 30 minutes.
Penfield is mostly newer homes on old farmland, with a scattering of older houses along the creek and the hamlet roads. Each kind needs different chimney attention, and we bring both. Newer does not mean ignored.
Contact UsPenfield spreads over about 38 square miles, so tell us which hamlet you are near: Penfield, Penfield Center, Panorama or East Penfield. We group calls by area, and your wait gets shorter.
If the fireplace is a factory-built unit with a metal chimney, say so when you book. We bring different tools for that, and nobody likes a second trip.
Contact UsPenfield was incorporated in 1810, and its mills ran on Irondequoit Creek. Late in the 20th century the farmland filled up with subdivisions, and the town is still adding houses: 36,242 people in 2010, 39,438 in 2020. So we look after two very different kinds of chimney out here.
Plenty of newer Penfield homes have a factory-built fireplace, a metal flue in a framed chase instead of a brick chimney. The panels in the firebox crack with age and the metal cap on top rusts. Cheap to fix when caught early, expensive when not.
Out along Routes 441 and 250 and the hamlet roads near Penfield Center and Lloyd's Corners, you find old farmhouses with real brick chimneys. Their crowns, mortar joints and flue tile have lived through generations of winters.
Low ground by the creek and up in the northwest corner near Irondequoit Bay stays damp. Brick on those lots holds moisture, which leads to spalling and white salt stains. We check the north face first.
A lot of newer Penfield homes have a stove or gas log in the basement or family room. The pipe and the flue need a yearly look. A stove can look fine from the room and still have half an inch of creosote on the pipe.
Expect a chimney sweep in Penfield to cost $200 to $330 per flue in 2026, a Level 2 camera inspection $175 to $400 and a new stainless cap $200 to $450. A written 21 point report comes with every visit, and the inspection fee is credited toward a sweep when the flue is dirty.
| Job | Typical Penfield home | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Sweep and report | Subdivision home with a fireplace | $200 to $330 |
| Single-flue stainless cap | Home with a rusted chase cap | $200 to $450 |
| Fireplace panel replacement | Factory-built fireplace | $350 to $900 |
| Repointing the top section | Older farmhouse chimney | $600 to $2,000 |
Those are western New York ranges for 2026. After we look, we write the real price down.
Every fireplace and stove in Penfield needs a look once a year. We brush from the top, vacuum with a HEPA filter and hand you a written report, and we've done about 1,150 of them in the past 12 months. See chimney inspection.
The cap is the lid. A Hy-C stainless cap carries a lifetime guarantee, shuts out rain and animals and stops sparks. On Penfield's factory-built fireplaces the rusted chase cap is the thing we replace most. See chimney cap installation.
Factory-built fireplaces have panels, and panels crack. The maker usually wants new ones once a dime fits in the crack. We cut custom panels to size and install them, often the same day.
On older brick chimneys we repoint loose joints and fix or replace the crown, and both jobs are guaranteed. See chimney repointing and chimney crown repair.
A wood stove wants a flue sized to it, and an old fireplace flue is almost always too big. We run an insulated stainless liner and hook the stove up. We think that is the safest way to heat with wood. See chimney liner installation.
On sound brick, Chimney Saver slows weather damage and carries a 10-year guarantee. It will not close a cracked crown. See chimney waterproofing.
Penfield visits depend on whether the fireplace is brick or factory-built, so we start by finding out.
A cracked panel or a rusty cap is usually fixed in the same visit.
A newer home does not mean a maintenance-free chimney. Factory-built fireplaces are lighter and carry more metal, which means rust, loose flashing and cracked panels. Caught early, a few hundred dollars. Caught late, thousands. We see both.
Rochester gets just over 100 inches of snow in an average year, and snow slides off the roof onto the chimney base and the metal cap. A fall check finds loose parts before the weight shows up.
After a big storm, look up from the yard. Loose brick, a tilted cap or a rusty streak down the side of the chimney means it is time to call.
North toward the lake, Webster gets even more wind, and we cover that too.
It is. Instead of a brick chimney it has a metal flue in a framed chase, so the parts differ: fire-resistant panels inside, a metal cap on top and flashing around the base. We check each one, and we know the clearances that apply to metal chimneys.
Grab a dime. If it slips into a crack in a panel, or the surface has worn down about a quarter inch, most makers want new panels. Cracked panels let heat reach the firebox walls. We cut custom panels and put them in during one visit.
Yes. Penfield spreads over about 38 square miles, so we book by hamlet to cut the driving. Tell us where you are when you call, and we will name the next open day for your area, usually inside the week outside the fall rush.
Look at the stovepipe every couple of months, and sweep at least once a year. A quarter inch of buildup means it is time. Basement stoves often burn low overnight, and that makes more creosote than a hot fast fire.
No. We clean, repair and reline what you already own, and we leave stoves to the stove stores. If you are shopping for one, ask them. Once it is installed we can run the liner and check the draft with the stove lit.
We had a brown stain by the chimney every spring and two roofers blamed the shingles. Ron went up, took pictures of the crown and showed me the crack. New crown, dry ceiling, and he mentioned two cracked bricks before I asked.
Bought a 1940s house in Brighton and the inspector said the chimney needed a closer look. They sent a camera down the flue the next week and gave us a report the bank wanted. We closed on schedule.
Our wood stove would not draw. They fitted a stainless liner and a new cap in one day, showed me how to burn it and haven't left a speck of soot on the carpet. First winter with no smoky smell.
